FRP Chemical Hauling and Dedication or Chemical swap

These recommendations apply to FRP-lined chemical tankers that meet the DOT 180.407(f) lining inspection requirement. Cleaning should comply with 40 CFR Part 442 or as agreed upon with the owner.

General Guidelines for FRP Linings

FRP trailers feature corrosion liners or linings typically ranging from 0.1 to 0.15 inches in thickness. When new or relatively new, these linings are smooth and resistant to various chemicals. For optimal performance, it is recommended to dedicate FRP trailers to specific chemicals, such as bleach, caustic, or acid.

Switching chemicals is discouraged for linings older than two years, as saturation with the original material may have occurred. If a chemical switch is necessary, consult a lining expert or the cargo tank manufacturer to ensure compliance with DOT requirements and prevent chemical contamination.

Pre-Cleaning Recommendations

  1. Prepare for Cleaning:

    • Ensure the vessel is as empty as possible before arriving at a licensed wash facility.

    • Confirm the last product hauled and obtain cleaning recommendations from the owner.

    • Exercise caution and use appropriate PPE when opening valves and outlets, as contents may be hazardous.

  2. Inspect the Vessel:

    • Check for pressure or vacuum and ensure proper venting.

    • Avoid spray spinners, hot water, or pressure washing, as these may damage the lining.

Cleaning Procedure

  1. Fill with Cold Water:

    • Fill the vessel 50% to 90% full to allow water movement during agitation.

    • Agitate the water by moving the trailer or stabilize it for 30 minutes if agitation is not possible.

  2. Triple Rinse:

    • Rinse with cold water three times, waiting 15–30 minutes between rinses.

    • Check and document the pH after each rinse, continuing to the third rinse even if the pH reaches 7 earlier.

  3. Empty the Contents:

    • Drain the vessel completely, removing any residual material (heel).

    • For top-unloading vessels, ensure hoses, sumps, and outlet valves are thoroughly rinsed.

  4. Document the Process:

    • Complete a wash ticket and provide a wash certificate to the lining inspector for review and approval.

Final Recommendation

Where possible, dedicate each trailer to a specific chemical to minimize the risk of contamination. If a chemical switch is unavoidable, always consult a lining expert or the manufacturer to ensure safety and compliance.
